About Me

Hi! I’m Megan. I’m a 30-something professional musician and teacher who sews and bakes extensively in her spare time. I have a Bachelor of Music and Master of Music in double bass performance, and I teach double bass, cello, and violin in the public school system in Nova Scotia on the east coast of Canada. I sometimes knit, although I’m definitely an amateur. I’m a totally self-taught sewist, knitter, and baker. Other things I’m into include: cows, cosmic bingo, the Tour de France, campus-community radio, swimming, and climbing.

I’ve sewn all of my own clothes except for bras and everyday socks since December 2015 (I tried sewing a few bras and I hated it!). I started getting hooked on garment sewing in a big way in October 2015, although I’d been making clothes on and off since I was 12 or younger. It wasn’t a thing I planned to do, but it just ended up happening that I sort of decided to stop buying RTW (ready to wear) clothes. I initially thought it would be for a year, but it just became a habit and I kept with it. Over the years, it has evolved a bit. In thinking about sustainability, I’ve been buying secondhand clothing as an alternative to making some garments. I have bought maybe 2-3 items of virgin goods a year in the last couple years, but only from companies that have full transparency of supply chain, strong adherence to environmental and sustainability policies, a commitment to ethical and safe labour practices and conditions. In keeping with that, I have yet to purchase anything (besides everyday socks and bras) from a fast fashion company since 2015. I strongly believe that we can’t expect perfection from everyone, and that all individual consumers should not be expected to uphold ethical standards – not everyone has the privilege to do so! – but this is a lifestyle and level of consumerism that works for me.
