I only discovered the pattern designer In The Folds relatively recently because of the interview she did on the Love to Sew podcast. When I checked out her designs, I fell in love with her style and sensibility. I love her silhouettes and interesting seam lines and other details like that, and the first thing I made was the Rushcutter dress. I was worried it would dwarf me, but it was so comfortable and I felt very stylish in it. Plus, the GIANT pockets are very helpful for keeping fun things like bass rosin and tuning forks in them. Emily also talked on the podcast about her designs for Peppermint Magazine, and how all of them were FREE. It’s a really great set-up for everyone because the designer gets paid, but we sewists get to have these amazing patterns for free! The first one I made was the peplum top, which I squeezed out of the cotton/rayon lawn remnant I had left after making a maxi Southport dress a while ago. And I mean SQUEEZED. I had to piece the bias tape for the facings out of 5-8 pieces per armhole/neckhole.
The next one I made is the jumpsuit below. The pattern is here, and I’d been eyeing it for a while but didn’t have a good fabric for it in my stash. Until I was at Fabricville last week. I noticed this cotton/linen blend (70% cotton, 30% linen) and it was regular price $16.99/m but on sale 50% off. And it’s 150cm wide, so I didn’t need as much yardage to fit the jumpsuit pieces onto. I do have to say that it shrank considerably in the pre-wash and dry, because I had to be very efficient with my cutting in order to fit everything in. I read online that the patterns are drafted for someone who is 5’7″, and since I’m 5’4″ I knew I’d have to shorten it. To determine whether I needed to shorten at the bodice or at the leg or both, I used the highly scientific method of holding up the pattern piece to my body and seeing where the crotch landed and whether it dragged on the ground. This method lead me to taking the 3″ out of the leg and nothing out of the bodice. I think the overall length is very good, although in future I might go for a bit of a shorter leg. I also added pockets in a similarly precise manner. Aka, I cut out some pockets and laid one of the pieces on the jumpsuit while I wore it draped over myself with the facing/shoulder seams already sewn and then pretended to put my hands in the pocket. I think it worked out, because I’m happy with the placement as well. I measured after so I’d know for future, and for me the top of the pockets start 18.5″(ish) down from the top of my shoulder.
I really love the long belt that can wrap around twice before being tied (although when I saw the pattern piece I was overwhelmed and alarmed by its immense length). I also had never sewn darts that come from the armhole before, but I really like the shaping they give the bodice. I also love the tapered shape of the pant legs, as well as the front and back necklines. Basically, I just really love this whole pattern! It feels just like wearing pajamas, but it looks pretty put-together (I think!). The linen makes it nice and breathable but the cotton makes it less wrinkly. I think it’ll be great for summer, to be dressed up or down. Has anyone else made this pattern or any of the other free ones from Peppermint?
This looks so lovely! Do you know roughly how many yards you ended up using to make the jumpsuit?

I don’t remember it being hugely different from what the pattern calls for, which is around 2.5m of 60″ wide fabric (I added pockets but that didn’t need any extra fabric. Hope that helps!
